A Nigerian bus driver based in US, Samuel Agunbiade, was on Monday honoured by The Spring Branch Independent School District board, for saving the lives of 30 students when their school bus caught fire as they were been were being transported to the district’s Guthrie Center on Friday November 20.
Agunbiade said he heard a loud pop and saw smoke coming from the bus’s tailpipe. He said he immediately decided to pull off into a vacant parking lot and within a few minutes the bus caught fire. Agunbiade got all the students off the bus unharmed. Receiving the award, Samuel who has been working as a driver in the school for 21 years now said;
They’re calling me a hero. I said, 'hero?' I just did what I was supposed to do. You guys are mine.”
He was honoured alongside another bus driver Drew Langworthy.
